Become a Youth Referee

Why should you become an AYSO Youth Referee?  We can't have games without referees. Here are some of the benefits of becoming a youth referee:

  • You can gain knowledge of soccer laws that you can use as a player.
  • You can get community service hours for school.
You have the best seat in the house to watch games!
  • You and your friends or teammates can referee matches together.
  • You are refereeing with others that can offer advice about soccer officiating and tactics.
  • You have support of senior referees that can help you learn and develop as a referee
  • You'll learn to make decisions and build your confidence.
Referees are critical to soccer - the game can't be played without them. The referee's job is to be the official in charge of the game. The referee is the independent arbiter and manager of the game and their authority extends to everyone at the field, including players, substitutes, team officials, spectators, and even assistant referees.

The referee's No. 1 one concern is to keep the game as safe as possible for the players. While there is risk in all sports, the referee is responsible for minimizing such risks from field conditions, equipment, spectators, and the players.

The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game safe, fair and fun for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators and themselves. They interfere with the game as little as possible, avoiding making calls for doubtful and trifling offenses. Referees only make calls for offenses they are sure occurred.

Youth referees may only referee matches 2 years younger than their current age.  To referee 10u matches, the youth referee must be at least 12 years of age. Referees learn that fun soccer varies from age group to age group of players.

If you would like to become a youth referee, please be sure to have your own email address prior to starting the process (this is important because all of your training in AYSO is linked to your email address, so it should not be the same as your parent's email address).

If you are ready to become a youth referee you can register using the guide in the link below or contact us with any questions.
