American Youth Soccer Organization Providing world class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives.

Region 85 (Lake Forest, Foothill Ranch, Portola Hills)

EXTRA

EXTRA is a program that offers organized soccer for players who want to play at a more competitive level. You can feel secure knowing your child is part of a trusted organization and will be given fair playing time. EXTRA doesn’t take away from the regular program, but adds to the strength of the organization by keeping players and their families in AYSO.

With EXTRA, AYSO’s core philosophies are still in place: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations; and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance.

EXTRA Program

AYSO Extra is an advanced play program for U8 thru U16 players. Recognizing the need to offer an AYSO based program for higher caliber players, and to help develop players for high school, AYSO is providing a program that offers a higher level of training from more experienced coaches and a higher level of competition for those involved.

The Extra Program requires more travel and commitment, so it may not be right for everyone. This program was designed for serious soccer players and their families and may not be appropriate for strong athletes who compete in many sports. Extra Team players may not participate in Club Soccer. All players will be asked to declare their commitment level to the program and that will also be a factor in the final player selection.  You can feel secure knowing your child is part of a trusted organization and will be given fair playing time.

With EXTRA, AYSO’s core philosophies are still in place: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations; and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance. AYSO Extra is played in one year age brackets, as opposed to the competitive recreational program that has two year age brackets. Players are never allowed to play down in age bracket, and only with rare exceptions requiring Regional Board evaluation are they allowed to play up in age.

Region 85 Extra Teams are expected to play in the Spring Program to prepare them for the Extra League.  This league is comprised of teams from Lake Forest, other Area 11L regions (Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita) and other Areas in Southern California.

Players who are not selected for the Extra team will be notified and are encouraged to register for our Spring or Recreational Programs. Our recreational program provides many opportunities for competitive soccer with fewer demands for time and travel.

If the Extra program sounds like the right program for your player and family, watch our calendar for try-out information. Contact the Extra Programs Director at [email protected] if you have any questions.

There will be an additional cost to Extra Players to participate on an Extra Team to cover custom uniform cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TRYOUTS

Each session includes a short warm-up followed by a series of individual and small-sided games. Players take part in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 activities, as well as a scrimmage where Evaluators observe player performance.

What Evaluators Look For
Evaluators observe players in a variety of activities and game-like situations. They look for a combination of traits that reflect both current ability and potential for development.

Qualities considered include:

  • Technical Skills: Ball control and first touch
  • Tactical Awareness: Speed of play, decision-making, positioning, and overall game awareness
  • Team Play: Movement off the ball and teamwork

Play Up Considerations:

It is believed it is in the best interest of players to play in their assigned age division.  Teams will be formed based on the matrix provided above and will be regrouped with EXTRA players from their school year, instead of birth year.

·       Grandfather clause: Younger 2013 EXTRA players (Aug-Dec 2013) may play up in 14u with RC approval.  (Based on tryouts/not guaranteed)

·       A player may play up one division, if there is not a team offered in their current division in their region. (Written RC approval needed prior to player being rostered)

·       Under no circumstances may a player play up into a U9 division per the National Guidelines.
